Beste allemaal,
Hartelijks,
de Nieuwe Meent
Dear friends,
As our supporter, we would like to bring you up to date with the current state of affairs at de Nieuwe Meent.
As you know, in the last couple of years we have worked very hard to realize our dream. Together with a very diverse community, we want to build a building that will become a home for about fifty people. An alternative form of housing, which is not governed by market forces, in which solidarity, community living, shared use, sustainability and inclusivity are paramount.
Although more space is gradually being created for housing cooperatives such as de Nieuwe Meent, we are still swimming against the current. The structures that will support housing cooperatives such as dNM are in development right now, and we knew when we started that as a pilot project we will have to put a lot of energy and work into creating those structures together with the municipality of Amsterdam.
Right now we are stuck.
Due to an incorrect land lease calculation and a drawn out environmental permit procedure, the start of the building phase was delayed. While we were busy preparing everything to finalize the agreements with the municipality and the bank after these problems were solved, the war in Ukraine broke out. Inflation soared high and building costs exploded. This meant that our business plan didn’t work out anymore and we were sent back to the drawing board.
During the last year, we’ve been working tirelessly to adjust our business plans, look for creative solutions and find places where we can cut and compromise. This included changing (parts of) the design, building materials and more.
The municipality has been supportive, increasing the loan given to dNM due to the current conditions. At the same time, they are still holding on to a plan that was developed a few years ago and is clearly no longer relevant to the times we are in right now.
All that is necessary is one simple step: we ask the municipality to interpret the current loan conditions in a way that makes our project financeable.
Some of our founders, advisors and supporters wrote an open letter to the municipality, in order to urge them. This letter is now circulating around collecting signatures. We are very thankful for the support we received so far, and hope that this might encourage the municipality to take action before we reach the expiration day of the land lease contract on February 1st.
Please feel free to add your own signature to it and share it with others who you think might want to support us with their signatures!
Which leaves us with one last request to make: due to all the unforeseen delays, the money we use to fund our current affairs (such as the design of the building, financial and structural advisors) has run out and the funds we collected in our crowdfunding campaign can only be used once we’ve reached the construction phase. To continue paying our bills while we work on getting the project financed, we want to ask you for a donation and come to our fundraising dinner party on February 11th. Every little bit of support will help us through this critical phase.
Thank you for your support and trust. We will keep you updated, hopefully very soon and with good news!
Warmly,
de Nieuwe Meent
