Will you be there on September 12? We’re definitely looking forward to celebrating our housewarming with all of you! In this post, we’ll tell you a little more about what to expect.
But what exactly is a “nieuwe meent”? A “meent” was originally communal farmland maintained by several people and used in various ways—for example, to grow crops or raise livestock. You can imagine that this required cooperation from everyone who had the right to use the land and the duty to maintain it. At the Nieuwe Meent, an old concept meets a new era. At the back-to-the-future farm party which is our housewarming, you won’t find any livestock though, just party animals!

What’s there to do?
Preparations are still in full swing, but we can already share some highlights with you of what we have in store.
First of all, we’d love to show you around the building! We’ll be scheduling tours throughout the day, so keep an eye out for the times if you’d like to join one.
For those who love getting creative, you can get crafty making collages in one of the living groups. And for that same group, one of our community members is organizing a (spray) paint workshop! If you’d like, bring something to customize with your own design, such as a plant pot, shirt, or shoes.
And if you happen to be bringing extra clothes anyway, why not stop by the clothing giveaway shop that will be there? Do you have a skirt, shirt, pair of pants, or dress looking for a new home? Leave it behind. And who knows, maybe you’ll end up adopting something from someone else in return.
Feel like playing a game? Join us as we travel back in time with authentic medieval games for all ages. On a slightly more serious note, you can also participate in a playful discussion salon. This way, you can experience what it’s like to make decisions in a diverse community.
Come check out our small stage in the flex space on the first floor, or—weather permitting—on the rooftop terrace. Dance to some great beats, let yourself be drawn in by short films, or sway meditatively to soothing sounds.

As you can see, there are plenty of fun things to do. To keep it fun for the volunteers as well, we could use some help. You can help us by, for example, spending an hour behind the bar, assisting with an activity, or helping out at the stage.

Practical Information
De Nieuwe Meent is located right next to the Amsterdam Science Park train station. From Amsterdam Central Station, it’s a 9-minute train ride to get here.
Are you coming by car? Parking in the area is limited. You can also park at the Diemen P+R and take the train from there; it’s a 3-minute ride to the Science Park station.
You can already see our building from the station. On the side furthest from the station, walk into our courtyard garden, and at the end of the garden, you’ll see the door to the living kitchen on the ground floor.
You can get both food and drinks at reasonable prices in our living kitchen on the ground floor.
The restrooms are located at the back right of the living kitchen. There are two restrooms, one of which has grab bars for people with accessibility or mobility needs.
